CLIVE JOHNSTON - Founder
Squash has always been in my blood.
Since my dad, himself a fine player, first introduced me to Ealing Squash Club, I was hooked. After buying my first racquet at age eleven, I’d already become passionate about the game and while still in my early teens, was picked for the Men’s 1st Team. Graduating to the Middlesex Under-19s, I’ve won numerous Club Championships and competitions and have since regularly represented the county in the Over-35s category. This is my fifth consecutive year competing in the British Open’s Over-45s while still continuing to captain the Middlesex team at this level.
Today coaching squash has become the major part of my life. I get a great glow of satisfaction seeing players improve under my guidance – irrespective of standard – but watching the younger generation coming to grips with the game’s finer points is particularly rewarding. My personal philosophy is based on encouragement, motivation and support; I look for “moments of inspiration” in every player’s game, attributes that always respond to, and improve with, skilled handling. A first-class coach must also possess the skills to assess others’ sporting abilities. Over the years, my analyses of individual players’ flaws/strengths/weakness has been honed and sharpened by experience so today my coaching remit covers total beginners up to and including the highest amateur levels.
